Refactoring with Observability: Novel Practices for Learning

In this devopsdays Atlanta 2022 talk, David Laribee argues that a dojo is a lab for inventing practices, not just a place to adopt existing ones. He gives two examples that came out of dojo challenges. Architectural mapping combines mob programming, story mapping, and the C4 model to map a system’s architecture as a team. Refactoring with telemetry pairs static analysis tools with long refactoring sessions on legacy code, so the team can talk about code quality, its metrics, and how much entropy it removes over time. Both rely on the short feedback loop of an experiential learning engagement.
