The SPACE of Developer Productivity
SPACE names five dimensions of developer productivity — satisfaction and well-being, performance, activity, communication and collaboration, and efficiency and flow — and then makes the argument that matters more than the acronym: no single metric explains productivity, and any metric read alone will mislead you. The paper’s instruction is to pick at least three dimensions and to include at least one perceptual measure, because system data cannot see the things that make work miserable.
SPACE is a curation framework, not a scorecard. That distinction gets lost when vendors convert it into a fixed dashboard, and it is the main thing to hold onto when evaluating successors like the DX Core 4, which trades SPACE’s flexibility for a prescribed set of four. The trade buys speed of adoption and costs you the fit to your own context.
